Woolibaar Selkirk Rex - "The Cat in Sheep's Clothing"My name is Donna Bass. I am pleased to introduce you to my Selkirk Rex. I (along with a lot of other people) have worked hard to produce show quality Selkirk Rex and to get Selkirks advanced to championship in the Cat Fanciers' Association. As of May 1, 2000, the Selkirk Rex are in Championship status in all major cat registration associations. What a great accomplishment for a breed that started in 1987 with one cat! I started showing cats with my first household pet, Pixel. I had found her wandering the apartment complex where I lived and discovered from talking with a neighbor that she had been abandoned, along with two other cats. One had disappeared by the time I found her. The other was an unneutered, extremely shy male. Pixel was so hungry for attention, she came right up to me and drooled when I picked her up. She came to live with me and, although the two of us had a bit of a hard time together, she was always purring for me. She now lives with my parents and is happy and contented, except when the other two cats pick on her. She gets to sleep on my mother's lap and prefers that to any other place in the house. When I moved to Sacramento, I went to a cat show and decided to try showing Pixel. I discovered very quickly that she was not at all enamoured of this, but I was enjoying it. I looked for a pointed cat that looked like Pixel (round) and discovered the Tonkinese. I bought a show/pet cat and neutered him. He didn't object too strenuously to the showing, but he was by no means show quality. His name is Pr Honeypoint Toi Xanh (Vietnamese for I Am Blue). He is a blue-mink Tonkinese. My intentions were to show in premiership, not to breed, but I ended up getting a breeding female who didn't like to show and unfortunately, didn't produce anything worth keeping to show and breed, except for a platinum solid boy (Pixelpoint Amadeus Mozart). Next, I got a platinum mink female kitten (GCh, Pr Honeypoint Fizgig of Pixelpoint) who seemed to love to show herself and through her kitten and adult show career did pretty well. She produced my first home-grown grand, GCh Pixelpoint Blue Moon Dream. After I got into Selkirk Rex, I continued breeding Tonkinese until 1995, when the difficulties of dealing with two breeds in a small house grew too difficult. I had produced two other grands by that time, GPr Pixelpoint Chrystal Singer and GPr Pixelpoint Chrysis Navigator. I still have the last two living with me and they are wonderful cats. But they aren't Selkirks! In 1993, I went to a TICA show and discovered the Selkirks. I have naturally curly hair, so it was natural (pun intended) for me to get a naturally curly cat! Thus began my adventure with Selkirks. In 1993, I got my first three Selkirks - first was Lil'BoPeep's Cocomo. Coco was a sable shorthair Selkirk Rex. The second was Lil'BoPeep's Tia, a natural mink straighthair. The third was Lil'BoPeep's S. Minnie of Woolibaar. Skinnie was a tortie and white curly female. Because of the requirements for advancing a new breed in CFA, I started the Selkirk Rex Breed Club (a requirement for CFA) and worked with the club for the next 7 years to bring the Selkirks into Championship status in CFA. The group that formed the core of the Selkirk Rex Breed Club scored championship status in 2000 - for a breed that was only 13 years old at the time! I was the one who was lucky and fortunate enough to not only show the first Selkirk Rex to Grand (GCh, BW Pamacs Winnie The Blue [Bear]), but I also showed the first Selkirk Rex Grand Premier, GPr Woolibaar Sugarfoot, who granded two weeks after Bear. Woolibaar Selkirk Rex in association with Pam Sharp (Pamacs Selkirk Rex) worked hard the first year in Championship in CFA with GCH, BW Pamacs Winnie The Blue, CFA's first Selkirk Rex Grand, and GPR Woolibaar Sugarfoot, CFA's first Selkirk Rex Grand Premier. Further information about how we fared in CFA is on the Results page. Since 2000, I have shown many cats and kittens with varying success. I have placed my kittens and even a couple of retired cats. My current show cat is GPr Woolibaar Lil'Red, Waggin'. He was just a pet, but when I needed a show cat, I gave him a bath and he decided he absolutely loved the idea of showing. He started showing December 15, 2003 and granded in April 2004. Now that he has granded, he has gone to a new home, where the two sisters will argue over who gets to spoil him the most! I don't do as much breeding as I used to when I first started out. I have a couple of litters that will be born during the late spring and early summer of 2004. If you would like to get information about my kittens, feel free to contact me at woolibaar@selkirkrexcats.org. A copy of my contract can be downloaded in .pdf format (you need Adobe Acrobat to read it) which you can fill out and fax if you decide to purchase a kitten or a retiree. Click here to read my contract. On the kittens and retirees page, each kitten/retiree has their own contract. I scan my cats for PKD and only breed cats that are PKD negative. To read about PKD and other cat diseases, check out my Other Links page. I breed for type and health, but like to specialize in the pointed and related colors. I prefer the shorthairs, but occasionally have longhairs available. I have a page that describes me and my hobbies (apart from the cats!). The rest of the web site is all about my cats. I hope you enjoy the information and pictures I've included. For more information emailwoolibaar@selkirkrexcats.org |
